Eco X-Capade & Eco X-Sprint | 17 April 2005 @ Gopeng, Perak

Newsletter Two: 01 April 2005

Dear Competitors, Volunteers and Friends,

We’ve pretty much finalized the race course and let me tell you that our little team is exhausted!!!

Over the last week we have bashed through impenetrable thickets, braved storms and earthquakes to boldly go where no one has gone before. We have ended up on the top of cliffs that we doubt anyone has ever set foot on, and in caves where one day I surprised a family of porcupines. And the race course will be taking you to these amazing and secret places! It will take you through some of the most varied terrain that we have ever had in a race. This is going to be one of the most spectacular race course that we have ever had. There are lot’s of technical sections, a good chunk of mountain biking and one of the longest water sections ever. We are super excited about this gorgeous and challenging race course.

A big hand please to our co-sponsors for this race: Brooks, Powerbar and Hydrapak, and our media sponsors are Libur and Traverama magazines. This event is proudly supported by the Malaysian Karst Society and the Perak Tourism Action Council.

We are also pleased to announce that the first winning team from the Eco X-Capade category will also win a free entry to the Wilderness Langkawi Challenge, an adventure race held in Langkawi on April 30th. For more info on this event, log on to www.wildernessmalaysia.com.

Hope you are well prepared! Hee Hee Hee (the evil laugh is back again for 2005!)

Have fun out there,

Chan Yuen-Li
Race Director

In this newsletter, we will be covering the following topics:

Sponsor's Goodies

For the first time ever our race t-shirt will be a Cooltex garment made by Brooks. The retail value of this item is RM 80.00, but of course with the event logo on it, it’ll be priceless! Powerbar will be supplying gels and there will also be opportunity to purchase more during race testing day. For teams who would like to purchase Hydrapak, 50% discount is currently being offered at the Summit Climbing Gym Pro-Shop. Otherwise you’ll have to win the race to get your paws on one!

Race Format & Disciplines

We figure 3 ½ to 4 hours for the winning team and 6 hours for the last team on this breathtaking course.

Mountain biking

The mountain biking is not going to be very difficult or have much technical single track. Most of it is pretty flat and fast but there will be parts that will make or break your race. Tactically, this is a crucial section if you are a competitive team.

Running / On foot

Most of this section can be called “run if you can” because the terrain is so tough that only a few abnormal human can actually run through it. Most participants will be trying their best to stay upright and balance on the very rocky path. Being sure-footed is a huge bonus, so we encourage all of you to train on some serious off road terrain. Even better if you are used to scrambling up and down boulders and rocky paths.

Rope Work

This race will have the most spectacular rope sections that we have ever organized. And you will have to be sure of your skills as once you get to the rope sections, you are committed and can only go onwards. If you lose your nerve up there, you’ll wait till the end of the race for the marshals to bring you down. There will be a rock climb, a diagonal abseil, a traverse bridge and one of the longest abseils we have ever had.

Caving

Definitely one of the highlights of this race. Have your wits about you, otherwise you can seriously get lost in this multi-level, multi-chambered cave. No crawling or squeezing at all, so don’t worry if you are tall or broad.

River Boarding

Yes, we are getting our money’s worth from our white flotation boards. So be prepared to jump into a river for a cooling or slogging section — depending on your strength.

Compulsory equipment update

Oops! There was a mistake in the last equipment list, where I forgot to take out the bike lamps. So NO NEED to bring front and back lights for your bike.

ADD a waterproof map case for your passport and other paperwork. On the last race, 80% of the team’s passport ended up as “hum choy” (salt veg)! So we will impose a 10 minute penalty time if we deem that we have to give you a new passport.

Base Camp

The race base camp is at Gua Tempurung. Report here for race testing and also for the race start.

Directions:
From the North South highway, take the Gopeng exit (about 25km south of Ipoh). From the toll gate turn LEFT down the old trunk road. Go down about 4km until you see a huge sign to Gua Tempurung. Turn left onto a new, wide tar road. This will take you to the visitors car park. Be aware that the carpark fill up with tour busses and tourists' cars. So grab your parking spot early!

Meals

On Saturday there are stalls selling food throughout the day. On Sunday (race day) as part of your race fee we will be providing a post race lunch/ tea (depending on what time you get in!!). Please indicate (and pay!) if you require extra meals for friends and supporters.

Accommodation

We are offering an accommodation package at a nearby weekend retreat about 20 minutes' drive from Gua Tempurung. The place has very clean long-house style accommodation. You’ll get a foam mattress but bring your own pillow and blanket. Pleasant and quite surroundings. Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast are provided as part of the package.

Accommodation Package fee: RM 50.00

Otherwise you can stay overnight in Ipoh which is quite close by. However, do book early as almost all the hotels in Ipoh are booked up that weekend. The Heritage Hotel (03- 2161 3635) is one place with only a few rooms left. Other options include budget hotels; Regalodge (05-242 555) or Fairpark Hotel (05-548 8666).
