Race Course Updates
Eco X Cycle Overview
The Eco X Cycle is a fun mountain bike race with 4 categories for participants: Men Open, Women Open, Men Junior (40 and under), Men Veteran (41 and over).
Batu Dam has already gained a reputation as being one of the best mountain biking areas around Kuala Lumpur. We are happy to announce that we will be creating some new trails for this race! The race course is approximately 22 km and will take around 3 hours to ride because it’s a pretty technical ride. There will be a short section of road riding to start off in order to spread people out before heading into the single track.
Eco X Sprint Overview
This is really a race that anyone can take part in! The entire race course is about 7km in total – which includes the kayaking, running, climbing and caving portions. Be warned that some sections of the race course will cover some very rugged terrain so it will be slow going and will offer a full body workout! Expect scenic views.
Eco X Challenge Overview
For the under 17 teams, their race course will be about 7km while for the over 18s, their race course will be around 10km in total. Expect even more scenic views and all the fun of the various disciplines.

Base Camp – Directions and Facilities
The race base camp will be at: Batu Dam lake shore.
Directions:
From KL, take Jalan Kuching heading North. Take the exit at Batu Caves, signposted for Kuantan. At the roundabout take 3 o'clock. Continue for a short distance (about 250m) passing a row of shop houses and take the first left sliproad heading downhill to Jalan Medan Batu Caves. Follow this road over some road humps until Jalan Batu Caves. Turn left here and continue on until the traffic lights adjacent to the mosque where you turn right towards Sungai Tua.
Continue on this busy road (Jalan Kampung Sungai Tua) with lots of small shops and houses until you see a bus / heavy vehicle workshop. Follow the road curving right to Sungai Tua (do not take the road going straight uphill). Follow a short distance (325m) until you see the overhead electrical pylons where you turn left to go to the entrance to the Batu Dam. The entrance has an archway with blue gates. Continue past the gates and park at the car park inside. Walk uphill until you reach the lakeshore at N03.16.47 E101.41.06. (All GPS coordinates are rounded to the nearest hundredth of a minute, with SA off.)
Facilities:
We will be setting up the race base camp at the lake shore. The base camp will have portable toilets and water trucks for bathing after the race and on the night before the race (Sat 3rd July)
Registered teams and marshals are invited to camp at the base camp free of charge on Saturday 3rd July. Please bring your own tents and all your camping equipment. We will have some food stalls set up where you can purchase some cooked food for dinner and breakfast. Bottled water will be available for sale before the race. During the race, there will of course be free water stations at various points.

Race Clinic
Good news! To encourage the participation of first timers (or even for experienced racers), we will be conducting a race clinic on TWO separate dates so you can learn some basic skills that will help you during the race.
Date:
Race Clinic 1 : June 20th 2010
Race Clinic 2 : June 26th 2010
Time: 2pm - 6pm
Location: Starts at Batu Caves for Rock Climbing and other skills. Finishes at Batu Dam for Lake Kayaking. (Map will be given upon registration)
Cost: RM 60 per pax.
Details covered: We will cover rock climbing and lake kayaking skills as well as other general tips on what to expect in an adventure race and how best to prepare for it. Abseiling skills will be covered for Eco X Capade only.
For the Abseil Clinic we will:
• Introduce and demonstrate the use of various abseil equipment
• Provide thorough instruction on how to abseil with usage of a prussic
• Upon demonstration by participants we will correct your mistakes if any.
We will like to encourage all to take this opportunity to brush up your skills. Otherwise, risk getting charged an impromptu RM50 teaching fee if you do not pass race testing!
To sign up, please call 03-7958 5152 or email eco-x@nomadadventure.com

Race Testing and Race Briefing
3rd July 2010 at Batu Dam Lakeside Base Camp
12.30pm to 5.30pm:
Race Skills Testing and Equipment check begins. Pls have own
transport to get to Batu Caves for rope skills test.
1:30pm to 5:30pm:
MTB route open for Course practice for Eco X Cycle.
NOT COMPULSORY. Last entry 3pm. Depart by 5:30pm
5:30pm to 6:30pm:
Distribution of race maps and course information.
Compulsory briefing for Eco X Capade, X-Sprint, X-Challenge.
Attendance is compulsory for all team members for Eco X Capade, Eco X Challenge and Eco X Sprint.
Teams and participants who do not pass the skills testing or equipment check will not be allowed onto the race course. We have noticed a drop in the technical abilities of the average race participant. Please be clear that Race Testing day is to for you to demonstrate to us, the race organizers, that you have the skills to keep yourself (and other people) safe on the technical sections of the race.
This is NOT a RACE CLINIC where you come to learn the skills. Guys, you don’t join a swimming competition to learn how to swim. So please don’t join an adventure race to learn how to abseil!
Testing stations:
- Mandatory and First aid equipment (Eco X Cpade, X Challenge and X Sprint) – show all items
- Kayak skills (Eco X Cpade, X Challenge and X Sprint) – ability to recover from a capsized kayak and climb back into the boat
- Abseil station (Eco X Capade only) – show ability to abseil with usage of prussic.
- Rock Climbing and Belaying (Eco X-Challenge only)
FAQs
Do I have to bring each and every item stated in the mandatory equipment list?
Yes, we will check every thing in the mandatory equipment list down to the number of gauze pads, water container, etc. EVERYTHING.
Do all my team members have to do the rope skills?
YES, we will test all team members on all ropes skills.
What happens if I cannot do a rope skill?
During race testing, an instructor will be assigned to coach the participant and a teaching fee of RM50 (per person) will be charged. Then they will be re-tested. If they still cannot perform the task, then they will not be allowed to do that section on the race and will be given a time penalty or risk being an unranked team.
Disclaimer:
Race testing is conducted by the race organizer to gauge the competency and skills of all racers. We must ensure that all racers on the course are physically and skillfully competent, so as not to endanger the racer and anyone else on the race course. However, even after passing race testing, if we do, on the course of the race, find any racer who show signs of incompetence and might pose a danger to him/herself and others, we have the right to stop the said racer from continuing a particular section, or even the rest of the race.
