Eco X-Capade & Eco X-Sprint | 22 February 2004 @ Sungkai, Perak

In Memory of Ho Swee Haw

The Eco X-Capade Sungkai held on 22 February 2004 is dedicated to the memory Ho Swee Haw and his enduring spirit of adventure.

Mr Ho Swee Haw, aged 34 of Singapore was involved in a fatal road accident which occurred at 1.45pm on the eve of the race while on his way to the pre-race briefing.

Swee Haw was cycling with his teammates (Team Hydrapak) on a tarmac road through a kampong near Sungai Sungkai. They were on their way to the river to receive a whitewater safety briefing as part of the pre-race procedures. Riding ahead of his teammates, he was cycling downhill over a bridge when he saw a 1.5m-deep hole and braked suddenly. He flipped over the handle bars and fell headfirst into the hole, sustaining major head and chest injuries.

Race officials and volunteer race medics arrived at the accident site within minutes of the incident and he was evacuated to Tapah General Hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away in Tapah at 4.15pm on Saturday 22nd February.

Swee Haw's father and sister arrived in Tapah at 3 a.m. the following morning and his remains were brought back to Singapore later that day.

The tragedy was announced to the participants of the Eco X-Capade and Eco-X Sprint the following morning. The start of the race was delayed to give participants the opportunity to pull out of the event. No participants withdrew and the race started after a minute of silence was observed.

Swee Haw was an avid adventure racer, marathon runner and mountain biker. He had competed in two previous Eco X races, Eco X-Treme 12 hours (Team Sixxis) and Eco X-Capade Hulu Langat 2003 (Team Try-Athletes). The biking and adventure racing community in Singapore and Malaysia will miss his presence.

The tragic accident was reported in the Malaysian and Singaporean press. Refer to:
