Eco X-ULTRA Sprint 2004
27 November 2004 @ Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor

Newsletter Two: 12 November 2004
Dear Competitors, Volunteers and Friends,
Well, we’ve pretty much finalized the race route, and it’s gonna be a real racers’ race. It’s a LOOONG race course, but can easily be completed in the time limit even by those who just want to hike the whole way, as long as they pace themselves well and keep moving at a reasonable speed. Do remember that it is a different race from our Eco X-Capade and you will have to adopt different race tactics. Do read this newsletter carefully as it has a lot of information which will be crucial to your race planning and your preparation.
We’d also like to say a big thank you to our various prize sponsors for supporting our race: Wild Roses and Bestard, Hydrapak, Solamas and Powerbar. They have contributed some great prizes, so train hard folks, as it’s going to be the survival of the fittest out there! Female competitors in the Eco X Treme and Ultra Sprint can look forward to some particularly good prizes! For more details, check out the updated info on our website.
Also a Special Bonus to all female competitors! Every signed-up female competitors will get a 20% Discount Voucher for Wild Roses products.
“Your Pain is Our Pleasure”. (Hee Hee! Evil laughter!)
Chan Yuen-Li
Race Director
In this newsletter, we will be covering the following topics:
Race Course Updates
NEW! NEW! Access zones for Gear box/bag.
Because of the length of the race, we are allowing teams to have a gear bag or box which they will have access to at various points of the race. In this bag or box, you can put your extra clothes, change of footwear, food, good luck charms, etc, etc. Each team will be allowed to have ONE bag or box (no size limit) and all your gear must fit inside the box or bag. Any access gear found outside the box, will be deemed as rubbish and will be disposed of. You can leave your biking gear in this box after the mountain biking section. You must carry all other mandatory gear with you at all times. The box or bag must be clearly labeled with your team name and number. Having this gear bag is entirely optional.
TIP: have a spare bag or section within to store your wet or dirty clothes.
Mountain biking
This will be a pretty challenging section, especially if the torrential rains continue. We figure on top teams finishing this section in just under 2 hours. There will be some steep climbs and fast descents. Most of the trail will be in estates or logging roads. And yes, you can ride your bike for most of it.
Trail running / jungle trekking
This will probably make up the longest sections of the race course, so do get in those hours of training to build up your legs. Let’s just say that we have calculated for the slowest teams to be hiking for up to 9 to 10 hours in total. Apart from testing your physical endurance, these sections will really make you feel like you are on an expedition-length adventure race as the distance between checkpoints are as long as we have dared to make them. You will need to have a lot of mental toughness to go the distance, and to know it may be up to 5 hours (or more if you get lost) before you come to the next checkpoint. You will have to be self-sufficient and prepared to handle any difficulties yourself, as it can take us a long time to get help to you. The good news is that the trails pretty nice and clear and there is little likelihood of getting lost.
Rope Work
This race has some fantastic rope sections, including the longest abseil that we have ever had on an Eco-X race. If you are scared of heights, do remember to bring spare underpants! Apart from that we have a flying fox and a jumar section. Do practice your jumar skills as if you haven’t got your co-ordination right, you will be absolutely shattered when you reach the top.
Lake kayaking and “swimming”
We are calculating about an hour’s worth of paddling. What else is there to say except that it’s going to be on a lake! There will also be a short section where you will have to swim. You will be given life jackets and floatation boards.
Team biathlon
There will be a 5 km section for Eco X-Treme teams. The biathlon works like this. There are two of you and one bicycle. One person cycles and the other runs. At an appointed place, the cyclist drops the bike and continues on foot. The runner comes from behind, picks up the bike and starts cycling. Theoretically, the cyclist will now overtake the runner and drop the bike somewhere up ahead. Repeat. Beware of running past your bike. Beware of your teammate cycling off and leaving you behind on foot!
