Chan Yuen-Li, Founder & Fearless Leader

Before starting Nomad Adventure, Chan Yuen-Li became eminently qualified for the job by gaining a law degree, working as a shepherdess in Scotland, an Outward Bound instructor in the Lake District and Colorado, becoming an award-winning newspaper journalist and theater critic, as well as holding part-time jobs washing dishes and packing condom instructions into boxes.

In the last 25 years, Yuen-Li has pioneered the development the outdoor industry in Malaysia. With many first ascents to her name and setting up the first climbing gym in the country, she was responsible for introducing thousands of Malaysians to the sport of rock climbing. As an enthusiastic kayaker, Yuen-Li also made the first descents of a number of whitewater rivers, including Sungai Kampar.

In 1998 Yuen-Li gained international acclaim when she captained Toyota Team 2020 in the world’s toughest race, the Eco Challenge in Morocco, They became the first Asian team to complete an Eco Challenge race and the team’s inspirational efforts became the focus of the Emmy Award winning television program of the race. The team went on to race in four more Eco Challenges and win the Team Spirit Award. She brought the sport of adventure racing to Malaysia. As course designer and Race Director for an amazing 17 adventure races in 8 years, Yuen-Li has also acted as a safety and race consultant on AXN’s urban adventure races in Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Yuen-Li is the Regional Director for Asia for Rescue 3 International and also an instructor trainer for Swiftwater Rescue and Technical Rope Rescue and a Wilderness First Aid Instructor. In 2015, she qualified as a Level 3 Instructor with the International Rafting Federation.

Yuen-Li fervently believes that adventure is an artful canvas that expands our sense of who we are and what is possible. Above all, she appreciates being an evolving spirit on this planet.

 
  • Faisal Kadir

    -Operations Manager & Rescue 3 Instructor-

    An exemplary outdoor leader and trainer who continually motivates teams to seize the day and find purpose and passion in every moment, Faisal also has the soul of an artist. Growing up in Kelantan with 13 siblings, he was mentored in his twin passions of the outdoors and fine arts by his art teacher. At university, he was a champion player of Rebana Ubi and Kertuk (traditional Malay musical instruments). He likes to draw caricatures and paint water colors especially during family time with his wife and three children. While he loves all outdoor activities, he is most passionate about delivering first aid training because it embodies the values of excellence, compassion and empowerment.

    Nancie Hoo

    -Assistant Earth Camp Manager-

    Nancie grew up in Kampung Koh near Sitiawan. She loves eating her hometown’s famous chilli sauce which she dips into just about anything. She studied Public Relations at UTAR and has six siblings who are all featured on her phone screen saver along with their family dog. The highlight of her career at Nomad has been attending an Experiential Educator Exchange Program in Germany and the “Into The Wild” international conference there. She loves the variety of her job and works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that all our programs run with smooth logistics and strong administrative support.

    Janggut

    Azrol Rizwan (Janggut)

    -Program Coordinator & Rescue 3 Instructor-

    A native Perakian, Azrol’s  hometown is Bidor and he completed his studies at St. Michael’s Institution in Ipoh. Azrol loves to cook and he actually studied to be a chef but was enticed into a career in the outdoor industry instead because of his love of nature. A proud father of two, he spent two years working for Outward Bound Hong Kong prior to joining Nomad Adventure. He is always eager to share his love of the great outdoors and the rich cultural heritage of the area.

    Moose

    Hafizi Yeap (Moose)

    -Senior Trip Leader & Rescue 3 Instructor-

    Hafizi’s mother is an Orang Asli from the Senoi tribe. He grew up in a village about 15 km from here. He learnt to raft guide with Nomad when he was 16 years old and is our longest serving trip leader. The two highlights of his career have been attending the Rescue 3 Europe conference in Llangollen,Wales and bring a junior judge at the world Rafting Championships at the Citarik River in Indonesia. Hafizi’s favorite past time is fishing.

    Najib Redzuan

    -Trip Leader-

    Najib and all his brothers are rafting guides on Sg Kampar. His village, Kg Pintu Batang in Gopeng, is a well-known for its Rawa community which hails from the Minangkabau tribe from Sumatera. They still preserve their distinctive dialect and many of their traditions from the 19th century. Najib has been with Nomad since 2006 and he likes to go motor cross riding in his free time.

     Roy

    Ruzaini Razali (Roy)

    -Trip Leader & Rescue 3 Instructor-

    One day while he was having a meal at the famous local Mee Kari stall, Roy saw our rafts piled on top of a lorry. Intrigued he introduced himself and was invited to join our raft guide training. Now a full-time trip leader and facilitator, Roy spends his free time perfecting his kayak play-boating skills.

    Ozzy

    Rafizi Rahman (Ozzy)

    -Trip Leader / Quartermaster & Rescue 3 Instructor-

    Born and bred in Kampong Kolam Tanjung Rambutan, Rafizi (better known as Ozzy) is the eldest of 4 brothers who all work in the outdoor industry in Gopeng. He learn to speak English through working as a rafting guide. Ozzy started out as Nomad’s quartermaster, but with his passion for learning and teaching others, he soon became one of our trip leaders and Rescue 3 instructors.

    Dzohri

    Dzohri Rahmat (Zack)

    -Trip Leader / Facilitator-

    Zhori grew up in the nearby town of Tanjung Rambutan and has a Bachelor’s in Sports Management from UiTM Shah Alam. Before he joined Nomad as a full-time trip leader, Zhori worked on his family farm. He loves the challenge of the outdoor industry and the environment of constant change that it provides.

    Rashid

    -Logistics & Projects Supervisor-

    When Nomad first started operating in the area, we kept our rafts underneath Rashid’s bedroom in his mother’s house. From building new bathrooms to coordinating our transport and finding new trails for our Eco-X race, Rashid is our go-to guy with a can-do attitude. A two-wheeled fiend on his mountain bike or motorcross, after work he can be found at his wife’s Kamparado Cafe, a favorite hangout of all river guides.

     

    Peter Ozany

    -Builder-

    Our mountain man from East Malaysia, Peter constructed our acclaimed high ropes course at Mountain School, climbing wall, tree houses, raft shed and many of the other elements that make Earth Camp the amazing experience that it is. A master craftsman who sees possibilities where others only find obstacles, Peter is also a skilled jungle survival expert who can light a fire anywhere and find food in the thickest jungle.

    Ayun, Azlan, Pak- Jamil

    -Maintenance & Housekeeping Team-

    This is the team that works tirelessly to keep all our activities running smoothy and facilities in great shape. Local kampung boys all, they are dedicated stewards of the natural environment and community they live in. They love nothing more than a durian feast and a good game of sepak takraw.

  • Ai Ling  (Irene)

    -Accounting & Finance Manager-

    Our Accounting & Finance Manager keeps our office well-nourished with her homemade soups and porridge. A mother of two, her family has a bird nest farm in Perak. She loves cooking, especially her signature dish of butter prawns.

    Magda (Mag)

    - Assistant Manager Sales and Marketing-

    This Polish “minah salleh” with a passion for travelling has visited over 30 countries, but Malaysia undoubtedly has a special place in her heart. It is her greatest joy to make people fall in love with our unique little corner of the world known as Earth Camp in Gopeng the same way that she did. When she is not dreaming up our next social media campaign or developing new experiences for our clients, this Tourism Management graduate also enjoys diving and playing with her pet hamster. She also has a serious watermelon addiction that requires daily doses to keep her happy.

    Fariz Tarmizi

    -Educational Sales Senior Executive-

    Fariz was a regular climber at Nomad’s Summit Climbing Gym before he was recruited into the team. In recent years, he has been very involved in flow arts which are all types of movement-based disciplines including dance, juggling, fire-spinning, and object manipulation. Fariz has performed extensively in Malaysia and in the region with his fire pois and dragon staff. To Fariz, flow arts are not just a fun and creative outlet; they are a new way to move, explore and interact with the physical world, a movement meditation practice, and a serious technical pursuit of mastery. This is the same philosophy that he brings to his job when he develops programs for school groups so that they may achieve an optimal experience.

    Sin yee

    Sin Yee

    -Recreational Sales Executive-

    Sin Yee is a Chinese Korean Malaysian whose hometown is Pulau Kukup in Johor, a village build on stilts over the sea. Her village sits on the most southern tip of the Asian continent and is surrounded by mangrove forests which create excellent fisheries. She graduated with a first class honors in Bachelor of Parks and Recreation in Science from University Putra Malaysia. She is passionate about facilitating people’s appreciation of nature by helping them get out into the great outdoors and have fun!

    Tang Miin Wah (Chrismiin)

    -Corporate Sales Executive-

    A Perakian from Bidor and the “chilli padi” of our office, Chrismiin is transformed every time she has a microphone in her hand. She is a gifted Master of Ceremonies who will keep any event or gathering rollicking along at a lively and engaging pace. With a Bachelors in Event Management, Chrismiin has the eye for detail and warm customer service to make your corporate event a success.

Join Nomad Team

Internship

You are looking for an adventurous, fun and educational full internship for minimum of 3 months, come and join Nomad. We offer internship at our head office in PJ and at Earth Camp in Gopeng. Working in the head office does not mean that you only stay in the office. You will get the possibility to learn more about the outdoor activities and will get the opportunity to leave with some extra training.

Volunteers

Nomad Adventure welcomes volunteers to our Earth Camp to help out whenever staff is needed or whenever you want to help out. We are organizing a number of events such as the Earth Hour Event and some Adventure Races. For some of these events we need volunteers to help us out. We will train you in advance and make sure you have the special safety requirements to help us with clients on these events and all of our volunteers are rewarded with food / goodies!
