Frequently Asked Questions
What if I do not know how to swim? Can I still do the whitewater rafting activity?
You can certainly come rafting even if you cannot swim. Everyone on a rafting trip will be fitted with PFDs (personal floatation devices) and helmets which will keep you afloat. As long as you can kick your feet and paddle with your arms while wearing a life jacket, you can come rafting.
We start the rafting trip with a very through safety briefing. Then we proceed to a whitewater confidence swim. This is for the participants to demonstrate to us that they have understood the safety briefing and can listen to instructions if they fall out of the raft. Every participant needs to demonstrate this before they are allowed on to the rafting trip.
How physically difficult are the activities?
The activities are designed to provide a sense of challenge to all participants, but they can also be accomplished by people who have no previous experience, and with average physical fitness. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish when you have the support and encouragement of your team.
Many overweight participants have joined our programs and even found it an inspiration to change their lifestyle! Our oldest participant on our activities was 75 years old, after his heart by-pass. If you have any medical concerns, please do consult your doctor and inform the instructor.
What is the grade of the river?
Sungai Kampar in most normal conditions has 22 different rapids which range from Grade 2 to Grade 3. The rapids are short and each rapid is followed by a section of calm water so if anyone falls out of the raft, it is easy to rescue them quickly. It is a river suitable for beginner to intermediate paddlers.
Can I bring my children on this trip? How about senior citizens?
We have taken quite a few families on the Sg Kampar rafting trip. It is a great experience for families as the rapids are fun and the risk factor is manageable. Children have to be good swimmers and 12 years and above. They must be accompanied by their parents or a legal guardian. As for seniors, my 65 year old mom came on this trip, and she was yelling her lungs out in the fun! The oldest participant that we've had was 75 years old, who joined the trip after a heart by-pass.
Can I raft with spectacles or contact lenses?
Contact lenses are more practical than spectacles. Some of our guides wear contact lenses. If they fall in the water they just shut their eyes. It seems to work as they haven't lost any lenses yet. If you wear glasses, just bring an eye glass strap, or you can go for the low budget, less glamorous option of using a bit of string.
What to bring along?
For your safety and comfort, we recommend the following items:
Sturdy footwear e.g. sports sandals or shoes you can get wet in. Please no Flip-flops!
Clothes that you can get wet or swim in
A change of clothes and a towel
Sun block or a hat/cap
Sunglasses
What is the maximum number of people that can go on one raft?
We carry a maximum 5 customers in one raft. Each raft will have at least one guide. On every trip there is always a minimum of two guides on the river.
How long is the traveling time from KL or Ipoh?
From KL to Gopeng, its about 2 hours fast drive. From Ipoh, it's 15 minutes if you use the highway.
How long is the actual river trip?
The whole trip is a half day trip. You will spend about 2 1/2 to 3 hours on the river. The other times will be spent on shuttling your cars, shuttling your cars, the safety briefing and enjoying a picnic lunch / tea.
